Rather than using my cinema pass on a Saturday night I decided to sit at home in my loungewear and watch some comedy on Amazon Prime. I have to admit I am a big fan of the Prime offer and knowing that I am a button away from entering the virtual world… Breathtaking.
I flicked through the selection and came across Steve Carell so a bit of comedy was on my mind. I decided to watch Seeking friends for the end of the world. Although I found it in the Comedy genre, it was far from it. My eyes welled up with tingly stingy tears and I was left with grief.
After watching this film, the question running through everyones mind would be… What would you do if the world had only 2 weeks left?
Seeking a friend for the end of the world focuses on two lonely characters, salesman Dodge (Steve Carell) and the fearless young neighbour, Penny (Keira Knightley). They embarked on a road trip in search of Dodge’s childhood sweetheart before the earth ends but it doesn’t quite pan out that way. Penny (Keira Knightley) has to choose whether she is to go back home to be with her family in Sussex or spend her last days with a stranger. Although Penny and Dodge (middle-aged man) are an unlikely couple, the genuine care for each other is very sweet. The friendship blossoms into romance but sacrifices are made.
While the earth falls apart around them they decide to lie beside each other. Within this moment a mixture of tragic emotions starts to flood out from both vulnerable characters, fear, happiness, love, sadness and then there is ACCEPTANCE.
Penny: I’m scared…
Dodge: I’m…. madly in love with you…
It does remind me of the final scene with Rose and Jack in Titanic but I felt satisfied with this setting because Penny isn’t sacrificing Dodge’s life in order to save her own. Stupid Kate!
Penny: I thought we could save each other.
Dodge: We did.
It truly is a heart-breaking love story and would I recommend it? If you want to cry and question life then why not!
